I think Mr. Wurmser ignored an additional possibility. Another thing to consider is creating a Kurdish state. Not easy, but combining the Iranian and Iraqi Kurds would be a way to put a great deal of pressure on Turkey

I got a sense of Syrian attitudes towards the Soviet Union in 1976 when driving into Syria from Jordan. Ahead of us was a Soviet military convoy. When the border officials found out we were from the United States, they insisted on serving us tea and telling us how much they wanted to be friends with the American, and they took pleasure in making the Soviets wait.

If Syria splits into several pieces, which piece will exemplify this affinity?

The scenarios outlined in this article raise the question of the role of Turkiye in NATO. Given that the Russians are now bombing the Turkish-supported forces in Aleppo, Turkiye staying in NATO makes more sense than I had appreciated previously.
