I think U.S. students are angered about injustice supported by their own government (i.e., the U.S.)

I don't think this is correct. I'd say they are more likely to be angered by examples of JUSTICE backed by their own government.

In the spirit of universities being places of "research, teaching, and learning" they have a role to play in bringing such abuses to attention. And so does the mainstream media.
